Fourth U.S. Spiritist Symposium

The annual United States Spiritist Symposium took place on April 24, 2010 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This event has become a symbol for the unification of the Spiritist Movement in America as Spiritist directors from all over the country came together to share knowledge and enjoy each other's company. The United States Spiritist Council hosted the event, which was also attended by representatives of the the International Spiritist Council and the Canadian Spiritist Council.

The theme for this year's event was "Mediumship:A Bridge Between Two Worlds." About twenty speakers from various states in the U.S. talked about this fascinating topic. The subject of mediumship was covered through several talks such as "Mediums" and "Practical and Scientific Aspects of Mediumship."

It has been customary to invite a local representative to acquaint the attendees with the background of the host city. This year the United States Spiritist Council invited Tim Myette from the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society to speak about Fort Lauderdale history and highlights. This was followed by Cesar Perri from the International Spiritist Council and keynote speaker Tom Cratsley from the Lily Dale Spiritualist Camp. Over the next few hours several guest speakers expounded on the scientific and practical aspects of mediumship.

This event was an opportunity to stage the introduction of new USSC publications. The book "Mediumship: All You Need to Know" by Richard Simonetti was launched and sold at the Symposium for the first time. The symposium also launched the DVD "Basic Questions About Spiritism" prepared by the New Jersey-based Divine Light Spiritist Center.

The DVD, as well as the latest edition of The Spiritist Magazine were included in a folder with other materials related to Spiritism and the Spiritist Movement and distributed free of charge to all Symposium participants. During the Symposium, youth education classes were taking place in separate classrooms which youngsters from ages 4 to 15 attended. Additionally, art was well represented in the day's activities with the viewing of two short films titled "Life and Work of the Medium Chico Xavier" and "Artistic Vision."

To complete the artistic presentation the Spirit of Drama Theater Group from Orlando, Florida, performed the play "The Fox Sisters." The event was brought to a wonderful close by representatives of the Spiritist Movement of California who took the stage to invite everyone to attend the Fifth Spiritist Symposium which is to take place on April 23, 2011 in San Francisco.
